Inter-rrupted

experimental // socio-political

This project pushes the definition of the modern book by taking on a non-linear approach and challenging its reader’s discipline and attention in a game-like experience made to make you question your behaviour when consuming media.

Mirroring the way we navigate the internet, both the physical book and ebook constantly assault the user with all kinds of information from funny memes to earth-shattering news and political discourse.

There are many ways in which this book can be explored, noticing that most people I show this book to allow their attention to be grabbed by the “memes” and bold titles, to then be surprised by the sometimes grim captions of the images, alluding to the bad mental health of the narrator.
The “serious” text, if it is paid any mind, clearly explains why the narrator feels disconnected, highlighting the political issues that affect the collective’s mental health.

I have created the EPUB in InDesign by using the button function and object states. The buttons are consistent in their look as to give the user confidence to push them. No button does the same thing and that is a rule that is learnt fast withing the book, pushing for exploration. While in the book I could have upside down text, in the digital I couldn’t or I needed to solve it with a button. Even sideways text can be a challenge for the reader in the digital version but I still incorporated it to push the interactivity.

The EPUB is recommended to be read on the iBooks app via an IPad or PC and can be downloaded from Google Drive:
