Dracula
Book Cover

gothic // fiction

This book cover is directly inspired by Transylvanian motifs and emphasizes the themes of tradition and the “fear of the east”.

The cover uses the motifs and creates an aesthetically pleasing symmetrical border alluding to the more sophicticated western vintage book covers. While doing this, it remains true to the stereotypes around the classic such as the colour red and the fang-like triangles.

The motifs used on the cover were found by me painted on various houses while on a trip in Transylvania. The intricate symbols and peculiar yet charming handrendered type felt suitable for the gothic novel, creating an interesting tension within the themes.

The type for the title and author was handrendered by me, following the patterns of the type in the village. It was also an interesting task to find a typeface for the blurb that would match the peculiarness and weight of this type.
